Course Description for Catalog
Into to Medical Science is a one-year curriculum for high school juniors designed to introduce students to the wide range of opportunities available in healthcare. This course will assist the student in making an objective decision on a career option that would best fit his or her abilities and interests. An overview of various health careers is provided. Core curriculum includes medical terminology, legal/ethical issues, communication skills, safety, body mechanics, universal precautions, career enhancement skills, and anatomy and physiology.
Objectives of the Discipline:
Both semesters will be spent in the classroom with various scheduled field trips that promote learning in specific course areas. Community service activities throughout the year may include: fundraisers and assisting with other health related activities. Guest speakers throughout the year will share information in their specific health field.
General Education Objectives (Core):
1. To become aware of the many aspects of health care and opportunities for careers in the health care industry.
2. To observe and participate in activities designed for the introduction to several health service occupations.
3 .To define terminology related to various aspects of health care.
4. To develop an awareness of personal and community health needs and activities.
5. To demonstrate knowledge in the structure and function of the body systems.
6. To develop basic knowledge, skills, and describe attitudes of a health care provider.
7. To exhibit attitudes and behaviors which indicate respect for the individual rights of classmates, co-workers and others in an authority role.
8. To develop leadership abilities through participation in educational, vocational, civic, recreational and social activities as a member of Skills USA.

DAILY Procedures
1. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. A student is considered tardy when he/she is not in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings.
2. The student is expected to continue class work until dismissal by the instructor.
3. The student is expected to come to class prepared for learning.
BEING PREPARED INCLUDES HAVING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
- Computer
- Pen/Pencil
- Notebook
- Wearing uniform for out of class trips
Students are expected to attend all class sessions and report to each session on time. If an absence occurs, the STUDENT is responsible for all work missed. Absences in excess of FTC policy may jeopardize successful completion of this course. Days absent can be made up thirty minutes before or after school or on the teacher’s identified days (120 minutes required for 1 day of makeup).

Additional information:
1. Each student will need a spiral notebook for journaling.
2. Unnecessary talking while myself or another student is presenting/talking is rude and disruptive and will not be tolerated.
3. Parents may contact FTC to set up a scheduled meeting time with Ms. Pringle during school hours. Other meeting times will be with scheduled Parent Teacher Conference throughout the year.
Classroom Policy/Procedure
1. Be on time and be prepared.
2. Do your own work unless otherwise instructed
3. No profanity.
4. No food or drinks, except water.
5. Please keep cell phones put up.
6. No Cheating! Cheating will receive a grade of zero for each person involved. Please remember academic honesty.
7. Respect others and their property.
8. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. There will be only ½ points possible earned for any plagiarism.
9. With any online work, please use copyright, and or work cited.
10. Remember with any writing assignment proper spelling and grammar will be expected.
Intro to Medical Science Disciplinary Policy
Consequences for failure to follow policy of the classroom are as follows:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Teacher/Student Conference, first signature
3. Teacher/Student Conference, parent phone call, second signature
4. Referral, third signature
Time frame for progression of consequences is per semester.
Evaluation & Grading:
Grades will be based on exams, quizzes, homework, class notebook, special projects/presentations, embedded credit, etc.
Students are expected to keep track of their own grade, a table has been provided by the instructor for this purpose.

All grades in this course of study are based on a weighted percentage system. There are 4 aspects to this course, which determines the weights of the system. This system is in effect so an individual cannot pass this course by relying on one aspect alone. The percentages are as follows:
1. Embedded Credit Assign 30%
2. Classroom Assignment 40%
3. Tests/Quizzes 30%
LATE WORK:
Late work is unacceptable in the work place. One of the essential skills to be obtained during this course is the ability to meet deadlines. Of course, there are exceptions for absences due to illness and school related activities. Instructors are not obliged to repeat a lab or other in-class experiences missed by the absent student. Students should be aware that the quality of the learning experience may suffer as a result of absence and or chronic lateness. There will be a penalty of one letter grade (10%) for each day an assignment is late up to 3 days. Therefore, the following penalties will be assigned for work turned in late:

3 DAYS 30%
4 DAYS OR MORE NO GRADE
EARLY WORK:
If you the student know of an absence in advance talk to the teacher regarding the assignments and getting it turned in early. Usually early work is not accepted due to keeping all students progressing together, but there are exceptions. The student is always encouraged to show work to the teacher before it is due for suggested changes to improve points earned.
GROUP WORK:
From time to time there will be group assignments. Students will be graded on their group participation, total group project, and also receive a grade from each of their group peers.
*WARNING ! ANY STUDENT PLAYING GAMES ON THE COMPUTER OR UNAUTHORIZED USE OF THE INTERNET DURING CLASS HOURS WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE DAYS WORK ON THAT DAYS ASSIGNMENT.
